Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
Tax-Services.ca is a free, independent information site for people from coast to coast who want to understand a tax rule and see what it means in dollars. It has 118 calculators in 12 topic hubs and more than 1,500 articles and guides on income tax, pay, sales tax, property, savings and small business. It offers no services: it prepares and files no returns and does not represent the CRA.
What will you find here?
- Calculators for take-home pay, income tax, GST and HST, land transfer tax, RRSP and TFSA growth, mortgages and more, all listed on the calculators page
- Guides that answer the questions people ask before they file, pick a tax preparer, buy a home or start a business
- Notes on the rules that change every year, with the date of the last review on each calculator page
Start with the calculator list if you have a number to work out, or with the guides if you have a question to answer. A job offer in Alberta and a wish to know what lands in your account is a calculator job. Wondering whether you even have to file this year is a guide question. Not sure which? The calculator picker and the tax situation quiz can point you.
Where do the figures come from?
Rates, thresholds and limits on Tax-Services.ca come from open government pages: the Canada Revenue Agency, Revenu Québec and the provinces. Many of them reset every January, which is why each calculator shows when it was last reviewed. The maths is written as code and tested against worked examples. When two official pages disagree, or a figure can’t be confirmed, the page says so instead of guessing. The full method is on the rate checking page.
Who writes Tax-Services.ca?
An editorial team writes, checks and updates every page. Articles carry no personal names because each one goes through the same steps. If you spot a mistake, write to us through the contact form. Name the page, say which figure looks off and, if you can, point to the official page that shows something different, and we will look at it. Fixes are handled under the corrections policy.
What does Tax-Services.ca not do?
We are not the CRA, Revenu Québec or a tax firm, and we aren’t connected to any government. We don’t prepare returns, we don’t file them, and we can’t give advice about your own file. The calculators give estimates from public rules. Real results depend on details a calculator can’t see, such as a credit carried forward from an earlier year, a slip that hasn’t arrived yet or income earned outside Canada. We cannot guarantee that every figure is current or error-free, and we accept no liability for decisions based on the site. For your own situation, ask the CRA or a qualified professional, and treat the official source as the reference. See the full disclaimer.
How is the site paid for?
The site earns money from advertising, so you will see ads. They don’t change a calculator result or the wording of a guide, and any paid link is labelled as sponsored. You can read the details on the advertising page.
What happens to the numbers you type in?
Calculators run in your browser, and the figures you type are not sent to us. The privacy policy explains what the site does collect, such as basic visit statistics and ad cookies. Your browser settings let you block cookies if you’d rather not have them.
